Pakistan-China friendship

As the Chinese Lunar New Year approaches on January 29, 2025, millions around the globe prepare to embrace the Year of the Snake. This festival, steeped in history and culture, symbolizes renewal, unity, and wisdom. Beyond its cultural significance, this year’s celebrations offer an opportunity to reflect on the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China and to pay tribute to individuals who have worked tirelessly to strengthen these bonds.

Two names stand out in this regard: Du Yue, a diplomat dedicated to fostering people-to-people ties, and Mohsin Naqvi, whose leadership has deepened strategic, cultural, and security collaborations between the two nations.

The Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, has been celebrated for over four millennia. Marking the end of winter and the arrival of spring, it embodies themes of renewal, family unity, and prosperity. Festivities include traditional dragon dances, lantern festivals, and the exchange of red envelopes, all symbolizing hope and good fortune.

The snake, this year’s zodiac animal, represents transformation, wisdom, and resilience—qualities that mirror China’s dynamic global role and its evolving partnership with Pakistan.

Du Yue, serving as the Director of the Political and Academic Department at the Chinese Consulate in Lahore, has been instrumental in fostering closer ties between Pakistan and China. His initiatives, such as the Consulate General Scholarships for Pakistani students, reflect his commitment to empowering the next generation and bridging cultural gaps.

Du Yue’s active participation in events like the Chinese Moon Festival at LUMS and Independence Day celebrations at the Lahore Museum highlights the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties. His work is a testament to the transformative power of individual contributions to the broader vision of China-Pakistan friendship.

As both the Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab and now as Federal Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi has played an important role in enhancing Pakistan-China relations.

During his tenure as Punjab’s Caretaker Chief Minister, Naqvi’s landmark visit to China in September 2023 underscored the importance of provincial-level engagements. Leading a delegation, he inaugurated the 3rd Ningxia International Friendship Citizen Forum and emphasized the enduring trust and mutual respect between the two nations. This visit also facilitated discussions on agriculture and industry, aiming to leverage Chinese expertise for Punjab’s progress.

As Federal Interior Minister, Naqvi has prioritized the safety of Chinese nationals in Pakistan, particularly those working on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. His swift response to an attack in Karachi demonstrated his unwavering commitment to their security. Meetings with Chinese officials have also strengthened counter-terrorism cooperation, with plans for joint police and paramilitary exercises further cementing bilateral trust.

For his efforts, Naqvi was awarded the China Consulate General Friendship Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the Pakistan-China partnership.

The Year of the Snake symbolizes wisdom and transformation, offering a moment to celebrate the shared aspirations of Pakistan and China. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a hallmark of this collaboration, continues to bring economic opportunities and enhance regional connectivity.

Figures like Du Yue and Mohsin Naqvi exemplify the commitment and vision needed to sustain this partnership. Their contributions remind us that diplomacy is not just about grand policies but also about fostering understanding and mutual respect at every level.

As we celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, let us honor the cultural and strategic ties that bind Pakistan and China. The festival’s themes of renewal and prosperity resonate deeply with the journey these nations continue to embark upon together.

With visionary leaders like Mohsin Naqvi and dedicated diplomats like Du Yue, the future of Pakistan-China relations shines brightly. Here’s to a year of transformation, resilience, and deepened friendships—a celebration of not just a new year but a renewed commitment to mutual growth and shared dreams.
