ISLAMABAD: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan, expressed his desire for constitutional amendments to be approved through consensus, stating that extensions should be based on necessity rather than personal interests.

According to a statement issued by the media cell of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, senior journalists met with Maulana Fazlur Rehman. During the meeting, he emphasised that constitutional amendments should be made with consensus. He further stated that extensions should not be granted based on personal interests but on necessity, and he is in favour of establishing a constitutional court.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman remarked that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif only asked for support and was not in favour of amendments for any individual. He pointed out that everyone had fought for Iftikhar Chaudhry, but the outcome of that struggle is now evident to all.

He further highlighted that two provinces are currently under the control of armed groups. In one province, nationalists were ousted through rigging, and in the other, religious parties were similarly excluded. He stated that the writ of the state has vanished in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The JUI leader also said that when nationalists speak of separatism, it is termed an internal issue, but when there is a problem on religious grounds, it is turned into a global issue. He questioned why this double standard exists.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman also commented that the current conflicts and deadlock are for the sake of personal interests. He stressed that amendments should be made in the broader national interest, rising above personal gains. He further noted that the role of institutions in elections cannot be considered a symbol of national unity.
