Govt Rejects PTM’s Jirga Plans, Naqvi Warns Against Parallel Judicial System

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has declared that the government will not permit the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) to establish a parallel judicial system under the guise of a jirga (tribal council). Speaking at a news conference in Islamabad, Naqvi outlined the government’s firm position regarding the proposed format by the PTM, labelling it as inappropriate and unacceptable.

Naqvi acknowledged the historical significance of jirgas within tribal communities but firmly stated that the PTM’s approach deviates from traditional practices. “A jirga involves tribal elders; bringing together thousands of people does not constitute a jirga; it is something entirely different,” he emphasised, highlighting the need to adhere to established customs and norms.

The minister categorically rejected the PTM’s framing of their gatherings as both a jirga and a court. He stated, “This is the decision of our government: we will not permit any parallel court under any circumstances.” His comments reflect a broader concern regarding the implications of allowing such a system to operate outside the established legal framework.

The government’s stance follows a series of allegations against the PTM, which has been accused of inciting public dissent against state authorities and promoting ethnic division. Naqvi remarked, “While we encourage the PTM to advocate for the rights of their community, it is crucial to do so without resorting to derogatory language or inciting the public against the government.” He stressed the importance of maintaining unity within the nation and the need for constructive dialogue rather than divisive rhetoric.

Despite some initial support from leaders of major political parties who met with PTM representatives, Naqvi noted a lack of follow-up from these politicians. He cautioned that it is untenable to demand rights while simultaneously engaging in violent actions. This point underscores the government’s insistence on a peaceful and respectful discourse surrounding the rights of all communities within Pakistan.

As tensions surrounding the PTM’s activities continue to rise, the government remains resolute in its commitment to uphold the rule of law and prevent the establishment of any parallel judicial mechanisms. The interior minister’s strong statements signal the government’s intention to manage the situation proactively, ensuring that any grievances raised by the PTM are addressed within the framework of existing legal structures.

The government’s firm stance against the establishment of a parallel judicial system under the PTM’s proposed format highlights the complexities of balancing community rights with national unity and legal integrity. The coming days will be crucial in determining how this situation unfolds and the potential impact on the PTM’s ongoing advocacy efforts.
