NEW YORK: Federal Minister of Interior and Narcotics Control, Mohsin Naqvi, held a significant meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, where they discussed a range of topics including mutual interests, UN peace missions, and joint efforts to combat terrorism. Both parties agreed to increase the number of Pakistani missions in UN peace operations and to establish a UN Counter-Terrorism Force unit, with Pakistan offering its expertise and support.
Thanks to the personal efforts of Federal Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the stalled deployment of Pakistani police officers in UN peace missions will soon resume. “Soon, 128 Pakistani police officers will be able to join the UN and receive their assignments,” Naqvi stated.
Secretary-General Guterres expressed deep interest in the reforms introduced in the Punjab Police during Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as the Chief Minister, including the establishment of Charter Centers and Protection Centers. Naqvi highlighted the increased number of female officers in Pakistan’s police force, a development praised by Guterres. “Women officers are a welcome addition to the police force. They deliver better policing,” remarked UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “Female police officers will certainly be considered,” he assured.
During the meeting, Naqvi shared Pakistan’s experience, expertise, and professional approach regarding the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) unit. He offered Pakistan’s assistance in the formation of the UN CTD Force unit. “Pakistan has played a frontline role in the fight against terrorism,” said Mohsin Naqvi. “We will provide all possible support for the CTD Force,” he added.
Naqvi also thanked Secretary-General Guterres for visiting Pakistan during the devastating floods of 2022 and showing solidarity with the victims. “The Pakistani nation is grateful for your appeal for assistance for the flood victims,” said Naqvi. “We appreciate the UN’s efforts, especially yours, for establishing peace in the world,” he added. “You have always raised your voice for peace and suffering humanity,” concluded Naqvi.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, and senior UN officials were also present on the occasion.
