Luana Andrade, a Brazilian influencer, tragically passed away on Tuesday, just one day after undergoing knee liposuction at a São Paulo hospital.
The 29-year-old had the procedure performed by a private doctor and anesthetist hired by her family, according to São Luiz Hospital. Unfortunately, she went into cardiac arrest about two and a half hours into the surgery.
The procedure was halted, and subsequent tests revealed a severe thrombosis. She was then moved to the ICU for medication and hemodynamic treatment but was pronounced dead around 5:30 am on Tuesday due to a pulmonary embolism.
The names of the operating doctor and anesthesiologist were not disclosed, and as of Wednesday morning, they had not provided any comments.
Luana’s boyfriend of two years, Joao Hadad, expressed his heartbreak on Instagram, describing it as his worst nightmare. He reminisced about their beautiful story and intense dreams, emphasizing that she would always be his partner beyond life.
The news also garnered condolences from Brazilian soccer star Neymar, who lamented the sudden loss of Luana and shared his relief that his girlfriend’s parents, victims of a recent break-in, were unharmed.
Additionally, Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina criticized the societal pressure reflected on social media and in the media, attributing Luana’s death to the pursuit of unrealistic body perfection.
He urged an end to the portrayal of unattainable beauty standards, emphasizing that risking one’s life for such ideals is unnecessary and that alternative ways to feel good, healthy, and beautiful should be embraced.
