ECP Chooses Not To Remove Reserved Seat Lawmakers Affected By SC Ruling

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has opted against de-notifying lawmakers elected on reserved seats, citing the recent decision by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which temporarily suspended both the ECP’s order and that of the Peshawar High Court.

According to sources, the Law Wing of the ECP has provided its analysis on the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding reserved seats. The opinion emphasises that while the Supreme Court did not overturn the decisions of the ECP and Peshawar High Court, it merely suspended them without specifically ordering de-notification.

Following a brief discussion on the recent apex court ruling, the ECP has initiated consultations with relevant authorities on the matter. Additionally, it is anticipated that the ECP may seek input from the Law Ministry before convening a meeting on Monday to further review the recommendations of the Law Wing.

“In the interim, the Election Commission has resolved not to de-notify the members elected on reserved seats,” sources disclosed.
